Suncraft Mines & Caves
Open the mines, farm gems, upgrade gear toward sunforged, and clear Obsidian without camera headaches.
Early in the full release you meet a character who opens the mines — a cave space for gems, gear materials, and the upgrade path that takes armour and accessories toward sunforged tiers. This guide explains when the mine unlocks, what to farm, how cave trips connect to Equipment Upgrades, and what Fixes v1.0.1 changed for ultrawide players.
If you are still learning village basics, finish Getting Started and a stable furnace line from Crafting and Furnace before long cave runs.
When the mines open
The mine unlocks through a story / villager introduction shortly after you continue (or start) a 1.0 save — sooner than late biomes, later than the absolute tutorial. Demo imports usually see the mine NPC soon after loading the full app. Watch for a new marker pointing to the cave entrance rather than hiking every biome from Map and Biomes looking for a hidden hole.
Bring:
- Basic carry capacity (Deep Pockets helps)
- A typed chest or staging pile at the cave mouth
- Enough village fuel production that furnaces do not starve while you are underground
What you find underground
| Resource / activity | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Gems | Shop trades, upgrades, and quest deliveries |
| Gear materials | Armour and accessory tiers toward sunforged |
| Obsidian rocks | Mid/late crafting gates; faster after v1.0.1 |
| Cave atmosphere nodes | Extra gather XP during Level and XP sessions |
Exact drop tables shift with balance patches — treat the cave as your gear and gem dungeon, not a second Sunspire village.
Gear upgrades and sunforged
Every piece of armour and accessory ties to skills and passives and can be upgraded through tiers culminating in sunforged. Those tiers unlock major skills that make tedious tasks feel effortless — the same progression spine ranked on Equipment Upgrades.
Practical order:
- Upgrade the tool or accessory that shortens your current bottleneck (gather damage, carry, crafting speed).
- Visit the mine when the next tier needs gems you cannot buy efficiently with Coins and Blueprints.
- Recheck the skill tree after major gear unlocks — some passives overlap with Skill Priority nodes.
Do not chase cosmetic tiers while furnaces idle for iron bars.
Obsidian farming after v1.0.1
Fixes v1.0.1 reduced the effort needed to break Obsidian rocks so they scan faster. If a July 28 guide or video made Obsidian feel painful, update Steam and retry with your current damage multiplier. Pair Obsidian trips with damage skills from the Skill Tree Guide and any mine-earned gather passives.
Stage Obsidian chests at the entrance so Ghosts and Helpers (or you) can deposit without long tunnel walks.
Camera and comfort (ultrawide)
v1.0.1 fixed camera jitter inside the cave on ultrawide displays and made cave entry settle cleanly without a visible slide. If you play 21:9 or wider:
- Update to v1.0.1+
- Re-enter the cave once to confirm a stable camera
- Use Steam accessibility options (camera comfort) from Launch Day Recap if motion still bothers you
Mouse gatherers: stand still on nodes for max clicks per second, same as surface play in Controls. Controller movement works for cave traversal; many players still prefer mouse for node damage.
Mine loop checklist
- Clear village fuel and ghost/Ember jobs so the surface keeps smelting.
- Enter cave → prioritize gem nodes tied to your next gear tier.
- Break Obsidian when recipes or quests demand it — post-1.0.1 clears are quicker.
- Deposit at mouth chests before carry overflows.
- Return to the equipment panel (now with an X close button after v1.0.1) and apply upgrades.
- Resume villager quests in Quest Walkthrough.
How mines connect to the rest of the wiki
- Automation — ghosts and Ember should keep surface production alive while you delve (Ghosts and Helpers, Automation and Ember).
- Economy — gems can be bought sometimes; mining is often cheaper than emptying your coin purse (Coins and Blueprints).
- Endgame — gear tiers and cave materials feed late story readiness (Endgame and Story).
- Achievements — restoration and crafting milestones may pop during gem-powered upgrade streaks (Achievements).
Common mistakes
- Living in the cave before chests and Ember exist — village collapses into idle furnaces.
- Ignoring v1.0.1 on ultrawide — unnecessary jitter.
- Sunforged rush without skill points — gear alone does not fix bad layouts.
- No staging chest — inventory ping-pong kills cozy pacing.
Master the mine as a targeted farm, not a second home, and Sunspire restoration stays on schedule while your character quietly becomes overpowered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I unlock the mines in Suncraft?
Progress early full-release story beats until a new character introduces the mine. Demo imports usually see this soon after launching the full Steam app.
What should I farm in the cave?
Gems and materials for armour/accessory upgrades toward sunforged tiers, plus Obsidian when recipes or quests require it.
What is sunforged gear?
The top upgrade tier for armour and accessories. It unlocks major skills and passives that speed gathering, crafting, and quality-of-life tasks.
Why was the cave camera jittery on ultrawide?
A launch bug. Fixes v1.0.1 on July 31, 2026 stabilized cave cameras and smoothed cave entry.
Did Obsidian get easier to mine?
Yes in v1.0.1 — Obsidian rocks take less effort and scan faster. Stack that with damage skills and upgraded tools.
Should I mine or buy gems with coins?
Mine when you have spare session time; buy only if a quest gate is blocking and coins are plentiful. See Coins and Blueprints for shop priorities.
