Resource Chain Planner

The Suncraft resource chain planner is a workflow guide—not a calculator—for keeping furnaces fed, chests sorted, and villager timers moving. Incremental crafting lives or dies on chain design: the order you smelt iron bars, craft planks, batch glass, and queue steel bars determines whether Ember looks brilliant or useless. This page targets players running two or more furnaces after the first hour, especially those pushing tram rebuilds and Sunspire repairs in the July 28, 2026 full release.

Planner principles

Principle 1: Coal is the real bottleneck

Iron ore and logs rarely stall veterans—coal routing does. Every chain plan starts with a dedicated coal chest within one sprint of all active furnaces. Rule of thumb: if Ember must cross more than one screen width to refuel, your layout tax is too high (Skill Tree guide sprint nodes help but do not replace placement).

Principle 2: One furnace, one job (mostly)

Assign furnaces roles during heavy quest phases:

  • Furnace A — iron bars baseline production
  • Furnace B — glass, steel, or alternating iron when A buffers

Swapping roles mid-batch causes Ember pathing conflicts and human error. Only swap roles between quest turn-ins.

Principle 3: Buffer before batch

Never start a ten-bar steel push with exactly ten iron and bare-minimum coal. Buffer 150% of coal estimate and 120% of ore—leftovers feed the next quest.

Principle 4: Chest labels beat memory

Storage chests from the skill tree revamp exist to stop grab-bag inventory. Label mentally: coal, ore, bars, planks, glass inputs, quartz. Mixed chests break automation assumptions.

Single-furnace chain (minutes 0–45)

Goal: first iron bars and planks for furnace two materials.

Sequence:

  1. Gather coal until chest holds at least six units.
  2. Smelt iron bars for tool and quest minimums.
  3. Process planks during furnace cooldown walks.
  4. Repeat until second furnace recipe totals met (Crafting Recipes).

Exit condition: second furnace online OR automation skill path within two points.

Dual-furnace chain (mid early game)

Goal: parallel iron for tools while prepping glass inputs.

Layout: corridor pattern from Early Game Builds—furnaces adjacent, coal chest centered, ore chests flanking.

Sequence:

  1. Fill coal chest to soft cap before any ore smelt.
  2. Run Furnace A on iron bars until quest threshold minus two (keep margin).
  3. Run Furnace B on glass precursors when sand/quartz inputs stockpiled.
  4. Hand-carry turn-in bundle only when both queues empty—avoid partial deliveries.

Ember prep: before unlocking Ember, clear walking lanes between coal and both furnaces—Ember inherits your layout debt.

Post-Ember automated chain

Goal: steel bars for tram without babysitting coal.

Sequence:

  1. Confirm automation skills and Ember speed nodes from Skill Priority.
  2. Set Furnace A to iron bar maintenance (steady state for steel input).
  3. Batch steel on Furnace B when iron buffer exceeds eight bars.
  4. Only visit physically for turn-ins, pickaxe upgrades (Equipment Upgrades), and new node clears.

Failure recovery: if Ember loops on wrong furnace, temporarily remove competing fuel requests from distant decorative workstations.

Multi-furnace steel + glass sprint

Late early game tram quest expects planks, glass, and steel bars together.

Recommended batch order:

  1. Stock coal to maximum reasonable carry.
  2. Complete plank threshold at workbench—do not interrupt for ore unless quest timer visible.
  3. Smelt glass batch entirely on dedicated furnace.
  4. Convert iron buffer to steel on second furnace.
  5. Verify bundle checklist against Crafting Recipes before walking to NPC.

Skipping step two causes players to smelt steel while still short planks—the classic midnight frost quest stall.

Quartz side chain integration

Quartz processing should not run on the same furnace minute as steel unless inputs are pre-sorted. Schedule quartz on downtime between quest chapters—process while reading dialogue or shop coins (Full Release). Equipment tiers that boost processing beat adding a third furnace prematurely.
